Hire a Private Investigator - Local or not?

Do you need to hire a private investigator? Read this and then give us a call.

In most cases it is better to hire a local private investigator. As long as you can find someone who is licensed and has enough experience to get the best results for you, you should do fine.

In general, the benefit in hiring a local private investigation firm is the control you as a client has and the accountability of the investigator. When you hire a private detective who is out of state and if they turn out to be less than reputable, it's not always easy to do much about it. Some states don't even require their private investigators to be licensed. In California and other states we have a fair amount of regulation.

Depending on the private investigative services you need it may make little or no difference whether the private detective is in your area or out of the area. Sometimes clients insist the Private eye is not local. Sometimes there aren't any competent private investigators in the local area and often times the best private investigator to fit a person's specific request is not the closest geographically. For some cases it isn't necessary to meet with the private investigator and you may not need them for other assignments, such as testifying in court to any findings he or she obtained.

Client requests that don't generally require the private investigator to be local would be asset searches and background checks and similar. Many requests to find someone can be done by using the private detective's computers but even this type of request can include the need to have someone follow up and actually visit addresses and possibly make contact with people. Everything significant should be discussed with you the client as it develops so both you and the private investigator are on the same page.

Another good reason to hire a local private investigator would be for a surveillance that is going to take place in your area. Don't sacrifice having the best private investigator available just to get one that is located near you.

It might pay to reach out a little further if you need to get real talent. We have had clients hire us for surveillance all over the United States, even though our office is based in Costa Mesa, California.

We conduct surveillance primarily in Orange County, San Diego, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties but if you want to have someone's activity monitored in another state, or country, perhaps an employee or loved one who is travelling, it sometimes makes sense to hire a private investigator who will be local to that area. Again, you have the issues related to hiring an out of the area private investigator. We often travel to monitor the activities of the subjects of our investigations. After 30 years we have found this to be a valuable option in most cases.

  • You can search out local companies but be wary of companies who appear to be in your area but are not actually there.
  • Check their website and look for their true location, visit their contact us page to see whether there is an address or call them and ask where they are.
  • Be sure they are providing good information. Look for their state license number on their website and ask them for the number.
  • Check them out before spending your money and trusting them with your personal business.

We often have to inform callers requesting a quick task near their home or office, like a four hour minimum surveillance, who are located on the East Coast that our firm is in Southern California. They find us on the internet and didn't notice we are located in Costa Mesa. We can sometimes assist these callers with a referral to a firm in their area.

When these same callers needed an asset search, a criminal background check, to find someone or get the most current address of record, or other investigative service, we were able to be of service and, as usual, we performed extremely well.

Ask the person you talk with whether he or she is licensed in your state and if they are going to be conducting the service you need or if they will be sub-contracting the work out to someone else.

The services offered by private investigation companies vary widely. The expertise however is usually limited to just one or two areas at best. Depending on the type of search you have conducted that has brought you to an investigation company, you may have already landed in the right place.

  • Check for internet reviews on any private investigator or company before hiring them.
  • Visit the State of California's website and check out your P.I. We have a link below to help you do this. You will need the license number or name to check them out.
