Prevent Elder Abuse: Did you know at Least 1 in 10 Elders are Abused?

This video, depicting elder abuse caught by hidden cameras, is an alarming, but important reminder for all of us.

America Now News reports that although 1 in 10 elders is suffering from some form of elder abuse, whether it's physical or financial elder abuse, as many as 23 more cases are going undetected.

Surprisingly, the majority of the elder abusers are family members, rather than paid caregivers, like you might expect. Here are some other alarming statistics about typical elder abuse scenarios:

  • Elder abuse often happens in the home.
  • It often involves powers of attorney/conservator situations where the person with the power of attorney abuses his/her power to take over assets.
  • Many people fear getting involved by bringing suspected abuse of an elderly.

If you suspect an elderly neighbor, or family member is being abused, please get involved. It is much better to find out your suspicions are unfounded, than to let non-action prolong a heart wrenching situation.

If you feel compelled to report suspected elder abuse, Call 9-1-1 immediately, or you can contact an Elder Care Locator hotline at 1-800-677-1116. It is not up to you to prove abuse is taking place. Once you report your feelings and/or observations, the professionals will do the rest.

Do you suffer from caregiver burnout?

If so, you are not alone. Most caregivers who physically abuse their elderly clients are not bad people, they are just tired, burnt out, and have become frustrated beyond their breaking point. There is help in the form of respite care, counseling, etc. Please do not let your understandable exhaustion keep you from providing caring and attentive care to your clients.
